The Complete Guide for Clash Royale Cards in 2026

Clash Royale now has 125 cards, but with just eight deck slots, many end up thinking that the highest rarity cards are all you need to get by, and that's not the case at all. Doing so could easily stall your trophy collection to the point of no recovery.

This guide gives you a better idea of what cards to use for each rarity ladder, forming a tier list of which ones matter in the current meta.

How Every Card in Clash Royale Is Classified

There are two ways to categorize cards in the game. The first is by type, of which there are three: troops, spells, and buildings. Troops walk forward and attack, spells land directly on a targeted tile with some dealing area of effect damage, while buildings sit on your side of the map, dealing damage, spawning troops, or serving as a distraction to pushes.

The second type of categorizing cards is by rarity. There are five tiers: common, Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Champion. This rarity is what determines where cards in the group are unlocked, which chests can drop them, how card stats scale at each level, and how many cards, gold, and gems are needed to reach level 16, the max level for cards of any rarity.

Common Cards

Common Troops: Archers, Barbarians, Bats, Berserker, Bomber, Electro Spirit, Elite Barbarians, Fire Spirit, Firecracker, Goblin Gang, Goblins, Ice Spirit, Knight, Minion Horde, Minions, Royal Giant, Royal Recruits, Skeleton Barrel, Skeleton Dragons, Skeletons, Spear Goblins

Common Buildings: Cannon, Mortar, Tesla

Common Spells: Arrows, Giant Snowball, Royal Delivery, Zap

These are the cards you work with from the beginning, and have the biggest share of the meta. Knight is one of the most-played cards in the game, while Skeletons and Ice Spirit are staples of one-elixir decks. Other commonly used cards are Archers, Bombers, Goblins, Spear Goblins, and Bats.

Rare Cards

Rare Troops: Battle Healer, Battle Ram, Dart Goblin, Flying Machine, Giant, Goblin Demolisher, Heal Spirit, Hog Rider, Ice Golem, Mega Minion, Mini P.E.K.K.A., Musketeer, Royal Hogs, Suspicious Bush, Three Musketeers, Valkyrie, Wizard, Zappies

Rare Buildings: Barbarian Hut, Bomb Tower, Elixir Collector, Furnace, Goblin Cage, Goblin Hut, Inferno Tower, Tombstone

Rare Spells: Earthquake, Fireball, Rocket

These cards are the reliable workhorses of the game. Hog Rider is a reliable 4-elixir finisher that has delivered since 2016. On the other hand, Goblin Demolisher is a newer unit, but it works well against decks that fail to deal enough counter damage. Royal Hogs and Three Musketeers are other reliable offensive options here.

For defensive and tank units, Mini P.E.K.K.A, Musketeer, and Inferno Tower are solid picks for most ladders, with the latter being one of the strongest building targeting troops at this rarity. Cards in this rarity present the cheapest practical upgrade path past level 13, making these the foundation for building the best decks on a budget.

Epic Cards

Epic Troops: Baby Dragon, Balloon, Bowler, Dark Prince, Executioner, Giant Skeleton, Golem, Guards, Hunter, Pekka, Prince, Rune Giant, Skeleton Army, Witch, Wall Breakers

Epic Buildings: Goblin Drill, X-Bow

Epic Spells: Barbarian Barrel, Clone, Freeze, Goblin Barrel, Goblin Curse, Lightning, Mirror, Poison, Rage, Tornado, Vines, Void

These troop cards have higher elixir costs but are also more powerful in general, covering both offense and defense as staples for tank-pushes and hard-control decks. These are also the ones that benefit most from evolutions, making them the best units to evolve when working with limited resources.

Rune Giant is a recent addition with a buffing mechanic that raises the damage stat of nearby units. Giant Skeleton is also notable for a recent rework that shifted its output from tower damage to the death damage of its bomb on destruction.

Legendary Cards in Clash Royale, and How to Get a Legendary

Legendary Troops: Bandit, Electro Wizard, Fisherman, Ice Wizard, Inferno Dragon, Lava Hound, Lumberjack, Magic Archer, Mega Knight, Miner, Mother Witch, Night Witch, Phoenix, Princess, Ram Rider, Royal Ghost, Sparky, Spirit Empress

Legendary Spells: Graveyard, The Log

These cards are powerful but hard to obtain. Legendary cards can only be obtained through chests, from the shop, through Pass Royale rewards, and by converting Wild Shards.

Among new cards at this rarity, Spirit Empress has the most complex way to deploy, which makes her very flexible. When it comes to spells, The Log is still the best at this rarity.

The 8 Champions, Clash Royale's Rarest Classification

Champion Troops: Archer Queen, Boss Bandit, Golden Knight, Goblinstein, Little Prince, Mighty Miner, Monk, Skeleton King

Champions are a subtype of Legendary, and while powerful, are limited to just one per deck. You'll need to reach Arena 16 and King Level 33 to access and unlock them. There are 8 such cards, each with its own unique ability.

  • Archer Queen: Turns invisible and increases attack speed during the active period

  • Skeleton King: collects souls from dead troops and summons up to 16 skeletons

  • Mighty Miner: drops a delayed bomb in the spot where it vanishes

  • Golden Knight: dashes up to 10 times, dealing damage while turning invincible

  • Monk: Deflects troop projectiles back to the attacker, while spells are redirected to the nearest crown tower

  • Little Prince: summons a guardian that tanks and adds damage output

  • Goblinstein: a doctor and monster unit, each with separate jobs

  • Boss Bandit: turns invisible and teleports 6 tiles back

Tower Troops: Your Fifth Deck Slot

These units defend your crown towers as a passive defensive class, unlike buildings that spawn troops. There are four options, but you can choose only one. Tower Princess is the default unit, versatile and balanced with no real weaknesses.

Cannoneer has slow hit speed but delivers massive damage per hit, trading rate of fire for a strong health and damage profile. The Dagger Duchess hits fast from long range and effectively counters low-HP and air units. Royal Chef is the newest here, and Throws Pancakes levels up ally troops for a limited time.

Hero Cards: The 2026 System That Rewrote the Meta

These are quite new, introduced only in December 2025, while the Mid-March 2026 unlock rework changed how decks are built in the game. Hero cards are variants of already existing cards, but they have an ability that costs 1 to 2 elixirs to activate. Currently, you get three special slots: Evolution, Hero, and Wild slots.

Heroes currently include: Hero Knight, Hero Giant, Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A., Hero Musketeer, Hero Wizard, Hero Magic Archer, Hero Mega Minion, Hero Barbarian Barrel, Hero Goblins, Hero Ice Golem, Hero Bowler, and Hero Dark Prince. 200 Hero Coins are needed to unlock each Hero card, renamed from Hero Fragments in the Mid-March 2026 update, where you now also unlock your Hero of choice.

Evolutions

There are 41 evolutions in the game, and each deck has one slot for it. Princess Evolution is the recent addition introduced in June 2026. You can get the evolution after one or two cycles of a specific card, depending on the card. These are significantly upgraded compared to the base versions.

Pass Royale

The current game's Pass Royale now only includes the free and Diamond Passes, with the Gold Pass removed by Supercell in October 2024. The Mid-March 2026 update further reworked it to have 90 steps with rewards per tier. Free players get up to 75 Hero Coins per season, which is enough to unlock a new hero every three seasons.

In Diamond Pass, you can get 6 Wild Shards, 225 gems, a tower skin, four Overflowing Gold Crates, 2500 Common Wild cards, 480 Rare, 90 Epic, plus Legendary and Champion Wild cards in a season. This means Diamond Pass recoups its cost through upgrade currency, even without counting cosmetics and chests.

There is also a lot to unlock outside of Pass Royale, through chests, daily shop offers, the Royal Wild Chest, and Legendary King's Chest at higher Diamond tiers. Champion Wild Cards are still the most valuable currency in-game, so save up all you can.
