There's bad and good news for you beginners. The relatively bad news is that the arrival of Town Hall 18 in November 2025 has added to the journey of being the best in CoC. But the good thing is, it's not really skill that'll get you there; it comes down to smart choices on your gems, builders, and upgrades.
This guide to Clash of Clans isn't here to help you learn the basics like tapping a barracks and training your first Barbarians, because you already know how to do those. We understand that the biggest hurdle for beginners is intimidation and choice paralysis, so here are beginner tips that'll propel you forward.
Save Your Gems Like the Village Depends on It

Gems are the premium currency in the game, and the biggest mistake made by beginners is wasting gems in the early game. While it might be tempting to rush an upgrade, buy boosts, and train troops instantly, all of these are traps.
When you start the game, you'll automatically have two builders, and the true fun kicks in when you start piling them up. Acquiring your third builder will cost 500 gems, the fourth jumps to 1,000, and the fifth at 2,000. If you're patient enough, you can easily obtain all five builders at around Town Hall 8 for free using only gems.
So the real question is: how do you earn those gems? Clear obstacles like trees and rocks for a few gems, check the Gem Mine in your Builder base for daily gems, and you can get a few hundred more from early achievements.
Why the fuss over builders? Having only two builders will take you forever to upgrade, but with five, that's more than double the speed. Having 5 builders means faster progress since you can run more upgrades simultaneously. That's simple math! Just make sure to never let a builder sit idle because empty huts mean wasting progress as well. With patience, you can grind out and unlock all the huts, but if you wanna save time, topping up your gems to spend on builders is another way.
Upgrade Your Town Hall the Smart Way

It's normal to feel rushed in building your Town Hall. That's been subject to debate. But we say the sweet spot is right in the middle. The smartest move you can do is to upgrade your Town Hall once your gold storage and elixir storage, army camps, and core defenses are close to max for your level. And when it comes to priorities, the order should be buildings first, troops second, and walls last.
It's a common mistake among new players to think they should max everything — every single wall included — before upgrading further. As important as these walls are, they're not the sole element of your progress.
What you really should pay attention to is the Laboratory. Researching upgrades in the Laboratory increases the strength of your troops, so it should run non-stop like your builders.
It's also important to look forward to Town Hall 5, which finally allows you to create spells using elixir, and Town Hall 6, which unlocks the Healer. These upgrades open doors for new and significantly better strategies.
Here's a table of each Town Hall level to help you plan.
Town Hall | Key unlock | Beginner priority |
|---|---|---|
TH3 | Mortar, Wall Breakers, Clan Castle | Join a clan, learn to spread Archers against splash |
TH4 | Air Defense, Barbarian King, Builder Base boat | Cover the skies, keep both builders busy |
TH5 | Wizard, Spell Factory | Add Lightning spells, upgrade your offense |
TH6 | Healer, Air Sweeper | Master Giant-Healer, dominate Clan Wars |
TH7 | Dragons, Dark Elixir, Hero Hall | Build a Dragon army, defend your base vs air |
Meet Your Heroes Early

Heroes are your No.1 army, and the May 2026 update has allowed you to meet your first one way earlier than old players did. The Barbarian King, for instance, can now be unlocked at Town Hall 4 instead of Town Hall 7, but with stats scaled to your Town Hall. He's not yet unstoppable, but he'll soon become one as you climb. The next hero you'll get is the Archer Queen at Town Hall 8, after your Hero Hall hits level 2. Learn to keep her alive, and she'll be the biggest offensive unit you'll have in the game.
Things will get serious from Town Hall 7. There you'll receive the Hero Hall and Dark Elixir, along with great upgrades that'll really spice up the game experience for you. A very important thing you have to remember, though, is that when you upgrade a hero, you won't be able to use them mid-upgrade. You can still field them for Friendly Challenges, but for farming, there's no other choice but staying short‑handed until that timer runs out. This is why you should always strategically plan each upgrade. You don't wanna lose just because of that.

How Shields Protect Your Loot

Being raided might hurt, but it doesn't mean the end of the world. The Magic Shield introduced in the October 2025 update grants you an automatic eight-hour shield once the attacker steals 30% or more of your available loot in a regular battle. While it's active, any attacks will only target a shadow copy of your village, and no resources will be taken from you. Most importantly, it is now impossible to burn shield time when you're raiding. It's very different from the old shield and Village Guard system we're used to.
It's also important to predict what raiders can actually steal. Storages safely protect most of your resources, since only 20% of gold can be skimmed by the attackers and 5–6% of silver from the stored Dark Elixir. Other than that, all uncollected items from the mines and pumps can be taken, especially when Dark Elixir drills are used. The smart move is to upgrade your village steadily, collect as much as possible before logging off, and spend resources on upgrades. That's better than getting stolen. Also make sure to invest in a Dark Elixir once you reach Town Hall 7.
Free Loot Most Beginners Ignore

Give the Goblins some attention. Most players ignore them, not realizing they're practically free rewards. If you want a low-risk, high-reward kind of attack, each Goblin map once will give you gold and elixir once without anything fighting you back. What's even better is that armies cost nothing to train in this mode.
There's also the Gold Mine and Elixir Collector, which are basically your infinite money glitch to power your economy. Always build and upgrade them at every Town Hall. They're cheap, and you just need a few days to see return on investment, as long as you tap them at every login.
Just always remember what was mentioned about loots in the Shield section: if it sits in a collector, it's vulnerable to raiders; if it's in a storage, it's mostly safe; and if it's spent on upgrades, nobody can touch it. The order of things is upgrade, store, and last is harvest.
Don't Sleep on the Builder Base

Town Hall 4 is an important milestone, where you can finally repair that broken boat on your shore and sail off to a second village called Builder Base. Many players treat it like a side quest, and you also can, but honestly, you don't need to focus heavily on it. Just make sure to visit the Gem Mine daily. It continuously produces gems you can use to feed your five‑builder fund.
Another thing is the Clock Tower that temporarily speeds up everything in the Builder Base, including upgrades, resource collection, and troop training. It's honestly been the best thing in the game, especially after the recent May 2026 update, which allowed another builder in the Builder Base for even more free gems and spare sources. Just focus on your main village and come by once in a while to check in, and you'll get the perks.
Join an Active Clan in Your First Week

Clash of Clans isn't meant to be solo. It's in the name. You're meant to play with other people to defeat another group of people. The moment you repair your Clan Castle, don't waste a second thought to jump into a clan and make sure that it's active. You don't need to chase the top competitive clans with strict rules and war schedules, and a quick glance at the level of the clan can tell you if it's active. What you really need are people who log in, donate, and keep the community alive.
Playing alone will never give you access to donated troops and spells that an active clan does. You can request Clan Castle troops before every raid and every time yours run empty; these are free, and clanmates are usually happy to fill the gap. Knowing how to bait out enemy clan castle troops before your main attack is one of the first skills worth picking up. That's just one of the perks. Another is you can join Clan Wars, from which you'll earn a lot of bonus loot and clan XP on top of your normal raids. Clan Games and Clan Capitals are also other ways to earn extra resources with minimal effort. All these are some of the best ways to grow your account while having fun with your clanmates.
Resources aside, the most valuable thing you can probably get from joining clans is improvement. You have clanmates who play better than you, and you can use that to your advantage. Ask them for tips and advice. Ask to watch replays of their games to learn from. Study how they drop spells, how they funnel troops into the middle, then copy the little tricks they do. You can even check your own defense log and see how your base gets destroyed. There's a lot to learn from others, so choose your clan carefully. If you do, that's like having free training.
Build a Base Layout That Actually Defends

Sometimes, winning boils down to how your bases are built. Imagine giving away a three-star win because of a sloppy layout. We don't want that. Make your layout as practical as you can, starting by putting the two anchors of your base building (Town Hall and Clan Castle) near the center. When they're centered, they are harder to reach, which means it's tougher for attackers to lure and wipe out your defending troops. That's the kid of basic but effective layout you should go for.
From there, fortify your defenses smartly. Use splash-damage buildings like the Mortar and Wizard Tower, and put them inside along with the Air Defense to cover both ground and air units, while Cannons and Archer Towers remain in the outer ring. Your storages will be used as effective walls to slow attackers down and force them to chew through layers. Remember that the game isn't about creating a pretty village, but building a fortress that'll challenge anyone's offenses.
Most importantly, be shameless. Steal ideas from your enemies if it works to your advantage. When you see another base easily defending against your attacks, try to copy their layout the next time you face another enemy using the same attack pattern
Beginner Attack Strategies That Three-Star

Offense is the fun side of Clash, and the good news is you don't need fancy and high‑level armies to start winning. The best attack to begin with is Barch, which is composed of half Barbarians, half Archers. This is a cheap combo that trains fast. But make sure to spread your Archers wide to avoid being wiped by Mortar or Wizard Tower in one go. The Barbarians will act as tanks who soak damage, while your Archers destroy defenses from behind the walls. Simple but effective.
Behind every raid is a system that decides how strong your offensive capability is. The first aspect of this system is Army Camps, which determines the size of your army. With a bigger camp, you'll be able to bring more troops on raids. You have your barracks that decide which troops you can train, and since training is free, there's zero excuse to attack with half-empty camps. Just remember this attack order: Barbarians and Archers first, then Giants, Goblins, and Wall Breakers, with Balloons, Wizards, and Healers as your Barracks level up.
Once you unlock your Giant-based armies, they should easily carry you through a dozen Town Hall levels. The real game-changer is especially the Giant-Healer at Town Hall 6. Deploy a few Healers behind a wall of Giants and suddenly your frontline becomes nearly impossible to kill.
Lastly, don't forget to grab your daily Star Bonus. All it takes is winning a single multiplayer attack each day, and the game hands you your star bonus loot.
Trophies, Leagues, and Ranked

Trophies and league climbing live inside Ranked Battles. For regular battles, they are there to farm unlimited loot. But even if you're just farming, climbing leagues still pays off in a big way because the higher your league, the higher your payouts.
For beginners, you just need to farm in regular battles to stack loot, save your Ranked attacks for when your best army is ready, and let the trophy climb happen naturally. Trying to force trophies too early just throws you against bases that completely outgun you, and that's a fast track to frustration.
Events, the Gold Pass, and the Trader

In addition to your regular loot, CoC is full of freebies, but you will have to know where to look. Seasonal events hand out extra loot and boosts for attacks you'd be doing, so check the events tab daily. The Gold Pass is Clash's monthly season pass, which gives resources and magic items like Books, Potions, and Runes, and they are best saved for painfully long upgrades. Finally, the Trader's tent offers rotating daily deals and the occasional freebie, and you'll just need to tap it every login.
Where to Take It From Here
Always remember that the players who succeed in Clash of Clans are those who have patience, take care of their gems, keep all five builders swinging, and resist the urge to rush their Town Hall. That's basically all you need to know as a beginner in Clash. Now that you know, head on out there and put those new theories into practice.
