Pokémon draws heavy inspiration from nature, and this is especially evident with Snorunt's evolution process. The little snow hat can become two entirely different Pokémon, locking itself right when you catch it. This one is tricky, so here we outline what you need to know about Snorunt evolution.

Snorunt in Pokémon GO: The Snow Hat With Two Futures

For a bit of context, Snorunt is a pure Ice-type from the Hoenn region, with a charming backstory. It's relatively well-liked by trainers but not for raw stats and other reasons you might think of. It's because of an old folklore claiming that a house visited by this Pokémon is sure to prosper for generations to come. The Pokédex notes that Snorunt live in regions of heavy snowfall, surviving by eating only snow and ice. When the snow melts, it steals away to live quietly among stalactites deep in caverns.

Because of this background, its appearance depends on the weather. Snorunt spawns far more often in snowy weather areas and hatches from eggs during certain seasonal events. Bonus if you get Shiny Snorunt. How To Evolve Snorunt Into Glalie and Froslass

In order to evolve Snorunt into either Glalie or Froslass, gender is the deciding factor, but it's not that simple.

Glalie is open to male or female Snorunt. A pure Ice-type and costs 100 Snorunt Candy to evolve into Glalie.
- Froslass is only for female Snorunt. An Ice and Ghost dual-type and costs 100 Snorunt Candy plus one Sinnoh Stone to evolve.

These evolution rules are consistent across the major guides. There's simply no way for a male Snorunt to evolve into Froslass, so if it's the ghost-type immunity you're after, always check the gender symbol on the summary screen before spending your candies, since only a female Snorunt can become Froslass in Pokémon GO.

Gender is locked the instant you catch it, so there is no fixing a bad pull later. If that's already not a problem by itself, you also have to worry about grinding for 100 candies and Sinnoh Stones.

You can earn candies by catching Snorunt (gives 3 per catch), double that if you throw a Pinap Berry during the catch (from 3 to 6 per catch), and walking Snorunt as a buddy (1 candy per 3 km), so stock on those berries and walk it off.

The Sinnoh Stones you can earn from Research Breakthroughs (not guaranteed), GO Battle League rewards, the odd event, defeating the Team GO Rocket Leaders Cliff, Sierra, and Arlo, and your daily trainer battles against the team leaders.

Glalie and Froslass: Which Evolution Is Worth It?

Now, if you only have candy for one and both options are open, which should you get? For battling in Pokémon GO, Froslass is the clear pick. The immunity that the Ghost offers should already be enough to sell it. But there's also Ice; pair that with Hex and Shadow Ball, and you can rip through Dragon, Flying, and Psychic types. Though it caps at roughly 2,040 CP at level 40, it should serve you well in the Great League and limited-meta cups.

Glalie, on the other hand, sits slightly higher at 2,105 CP, the same level as Frost Breath and Avalanche, yet it has almost no defensive resistances and easily gets outclassed by the likes of Walrein and Alolan Ninetales.

Though somehow mid, Glalie's trump card is turning into Mega Glalie. It needs 200 Mega Energy but can blast up to 3,200 CP to 3,600, becoming one of the strongest Ice attackers in the game, and can melt Dragon, Flying, Grass, and Ground raid bosses. It also boosts the damage of every Ice-type on your party.

So, evolve Froslass for PvP coverage and personality, evolve Glalie for raid utility and that Mega slot.

How To Get Shiny Snorunt, Shiny Glalie, and Shiny Froslass

Shiny Snorunt trades its grey hat for a soft teal hat. This palette carries into both Froslass and Glalie: a cool blue-grey shiny Glalie and a pale, elegant shiny Froslass. This is because the shiny status carries all the way through evolution. When you evolve a shiny Snorunt, you also end up with either a shiny Glalie or Froslass. A rare shiny that's also a usable battler? Count us in!

Wouldn't it be nice if there were a way to specifically get the shinies? We'd like to give you that if we knew, but unfortunately there's no other way to do that but by increasing your odds. The best way to get a shiny Snorunt is to find Snorunt more often by following the weather and lure tricks mentioned above, and do this especially during Featured events and Days. That should very well increase your chances of landing on a shiny. Maybe one lucky tap in a snowstorm would do the trick.

Lock In the Evolution You Actually Want

Snorunt needs a little more planning than other early Ice-types, since only a female Snorunt can evolve into Froslass while either gender can become Glalie. When Snorunt evolves into Froslass, you'll need a Sinnoh Stone ready — especially if you want to evolve Froslass — and decide whether you are building for PvP coverage or a Mega Glalie raid anchor before spending candies.

If all of this sounds rather complicated, skip the snow-weather grind altogether and jump straight to a box already stocked with shinies and rare Ice-types with a ready-made Pokémon GO account. But regardless, even without one, a single well-timed shiny Snorunt is worth every cold, fruitless tap it takes to track down.
