Clash of Clans: When Should You Upgrade to the Next Town Hall?

Whenever you have enough resources and you click your Town Hall, the temptation has never been clearer. So many possibilities behind the next upgrade. You go around your clan chat and ask around, just to see their opinion, their thoughts. One says to max everything first and upgrade everything until there’s nothing left to upgrade, while another argues that rushing is what will get you ahead.
But the thing is, neither of them has the full picture.
We all miss the days when figuring out the right time to upgrade was simpler, more intuitive, but these days, with all the hero equipment, pets, and patches on top of the base progression system, hitting the next Town Hall isn’t just a matter of finishing your walls. It all boils down to how you play and what you want out of the game.
Your Laboratory Matters More Than Your Walls Do

Offense gives you a better return than any flawless defense you’ve won, trust me. With stronger troops, you’ll have a much easier time farming, collecting resources, and climbing overall when your defenses aren’t quite where they should be.
Let’s take a step back for a second here and think about the ratio. How often are you attacking compared to someone attacking you? For most active players, the answer here is obviously offense. So, if your main troops for farming are maxed out, good news: you’re actually in a far better position than players who are still stuck upgrading their Wizard Towers and maxing out every troop.
Don’t forget about your heroes as well! They really do some serious business, not just for your attacks but for your defenses, especially in Clan Wars. If they are sitting ten to fifteen levels below where they should be, it’s best to focus on their upgrades instead of any more random ones.
Ask Yourself Why You're Actually Playing

For someone who just gets in the game a few nights a week for fun, doesn’t need to approach progression the same way as a player grinding Legends League every single season.
And if you’re mostly in it to unlock new content and keep things fresh, then there’s nothing wrong with upgrading a little earlier.
But if you’re into competitive results, this is the only time I suggest staying at the current level a bit longer to lock in key hero levels that tend to pay off down the line.
For those whose focus is farming, though, you guys sit somewhere in between: make sure to get a balance between upgrading your collectors and newer resource buildings, and do not put offensive upgrades at the back of your list.

CWL is one of the reasons careless rushing catches up with you. Bases with a high Town Hall level but that are obviously underdeveloped and weak become vulnerable and are often targeted by experienced players. This means you contribute less than you did if you’ve opted for an upgraded town.
But that’s not to argue for delaying either; it’s just about sequencing things well. Players with lots of experience make a habit of prioritizing their major heroes for upgrade right before they move up a Town Hall, making the adjustment period less painful and more forgiving.
Idle Builders Cost You More Than an Unfinished Wall Does
If there’s an idle builder in your town, then you’re doing something wrong. An idle builder adds up fast. I mean, sure, they’ve been working hard lately, but if they’re just sitting there doing nothing while you farm resources for a wall segment, they aren’t really being efficient. It’s some Clash-level procrastination.
Once your major buildings are done, Laboratory research is close to finishing, your heroes are at a decent level, and builders are starting to run out of things to do, then that is the best time to go for the Town Hall upgrade.
Why the Old "Never Rush" Rule Doesn't Fully Apply Anymore

A lot of players in the community today have actually been leaning more towards smart, efficient progression than towards upgrading everything that needs to be upgraded. If your offense could already carry through regular farming sessions and hold itself during clan wars, then camping at your current Town Hall for another month just to “clear the leftover traps” isn’t really going to cut it for you.
It’s also worth noting that many players juggle multiple accounts or games across different networks. Some like to test a VPN for free before they subscribe, so when it comes to upgrades, many players have to gauge the right time and method to upgrade their Town Halls.
Don't Overlook the Passive Side of Progression

Just take automatic upgrades as an example: being away from the game makes them a lot less punishing than they used to be. Our guide “How Does Auto Upgrade Work in Clash of Clans?” breaks down the mechanics and clears up a few things that many players still get wrong.
A Quick Gut-Check Before You Hit Upgrade
● The army used primarily for farming is close to maxed out
● Heroes aren't badly behind where they should be
● Laboratory research is mostly caught up
● Builders are idling more than actually doing something
● Clan War performance won't take a downward plunge after upgrading
● You're genuinely excited for the next Town Hall, not upgrading just because the option exists
If you’ve checked and agreed to most of the points, then you’re ready. But if you only have one or two you’re sure about, then it might be best to stay a bit longer where you are.
