Build the Ultimate Lineup With Pokémon GO Checkers

The Pokémon series is a popular franchise known for many things, from its iconic monster-capture system to its cute Pokemon designs, which are well-loved by fans of all ages. Aside from these things, it also possesses a standout stat-based combat system that makes use of a robust elemental alignment mechanic.

Because the system works so well, Pokémon has seemed unwilling to change its core formula across each new generation. That's only until the release of Pokémon GO, which was a shocking release due to many of its characteristics, including its mobile platform and departure from previous generation mechanics. But its take on how Pokémon stats work is another notable change.

Understanding Pokémon GO Stats for Battle

While the mainline Pokémon games all presented stats in the same way that many RPGs do, Pokémon GO changed this up greatly from previous generations. Most stats are now hidden, but players can calculate the IVs using a rather complicated calculation mechanic.

Instead of a numerical level, you can only estimate an individual Pokémon's current level based on a white half-circle on its own page, and the trainer's current level is its maximum level ceiling. Total stats are now derived from two main stat categories, combat power and individual values.

Combat Power (CP)

CP is shown at the top of a Pokémon's status page using a single number, but provides an accurate representation of various facets of the Pokémon's level and stats collectively displayed by this figure. This number is affected by various factors such as its Base Stats, Individual Values, and its level. A higher CP figure means a generally stronger Pokémon overall.

Individual Values (IV)

Pokémon of the same type have similar base stats, but their IVs (Individual Values) are what differentiate individuals from others of their kind. This is harder to gauge because it's a hidden stat, but the game does have an Appraisal system that gives players an estimate of how strong a certain Pokémon is based on its IV. For a complete list of all Pokémon, check out our Pokedex collection!

There are three categories for IV, namely Attack, Defense, and Stamina. Each IV can have a maximum of 15 points for a total of 45. When appraising, Pokémon are awarded a medal with 0 to 4 stars. Each star represents a value range within the 45-point total.

  • 0-star means having less than 50% of the 45-point total.

  • 1-star means up to 64.4% of total points.

  • 2-star means a point total of up to 80%.

  • 3-star is for 82-97.8%.

  • 4-star denotes max points for every stat.

The 4-star medal only has 3 stars but is a different color from the rest.

Using Tools to Dissect Pokémon Data

Now, let's see how the IV and CP calculator works and what use they have for players. While the appraisal system is great for identifying excellent potential, it's still a bit too vague unless you're only looking for 4-star IVs. The IV calculator lets you work out a better estimate.

The CP calculator is used when we have a target set of IVs for a given Pokémon type. Let's continue with how to use these pokémon iv calculator tools and see how they work for ourselves.

You can browse our wide selection of Pokemon to find the rare catches that you would otherwise need lots of luck to encounter in the wild!

The IV Calculator

Using the IV calculator involves inputting a few different figures that you can get from your Pokémon's page. You'll need to specify the Pokémon and set its CP, HP, and Stardust cost. After inputting all of these, click the calculate button for the results.

You'll get a set of possible IVs for your Pokémon, along with the percentage based on each IV's total, with 45 as the max total. You'll also see levels associated with each result, with lower levels giving a much better IV percentage.

By combining the IV calculator with the in-game appraisal, you'll be able to accurately determine how potent a certain Pokémon is and if it is worth investing in.

The CP Calculator

Instead of finding out the IV of certain Pokémon, this Pokémon IV calculator lets you know the CP you'll need to look out for when it comes to specific Pokémon. If you're using Pikachu as the target Pokémon, set each IV value to 15 and the level you'd like. The result will show you what CP a Pikachu with top-tier IVs should possess.

This is a great tool to set hints for yourself when playing Pokémon GO and encountering a Pokémon with great potential. By knowing the best CP ranges, you won't miss out on a great catch.
