About BGMI and PUBG Mobile

PUBG Mobile was released in 2018 to great success, reaching more than 100 million downloads for the year globally. It was also a big hit in India, where it was published by the Chinese publisher Tencent.

PUBG Mobile’s success continued into 2019 with over 400 million total downloads by year’s end. Tensions between India and China in 2020 prompted data privacy concerns for India’s citizens, and PUBG Mobile was banned in late 2020 when active users for the mobile game in India were estimated to account for up to 25% of the game’s total active player population.

Krafton, the game’s developer, picked up publishing duties from Tencent and relaunched the game as Battlegrounds Mobile India in 2021 to continued success with an increase in total players and around 16 million daily active users and 2.4 million peak concurrent players.

While initially released only for Google Android, it was later released through Apple iOS devices, with over 50 million total downloads in its release year.

By 2024, BGMI cemented its status in Asian markets. BGMI retained its popularity through 2025, with 85% of the game’s revenue coming from Asian countries, including Krafton in India. It has also created a strong Esports presence with two official annual major tournaments.

PUBG Mobile has also retained much of its popularity in 2025. It is still one of the two most popular games based on active users in India and concurrent player data, along with Epic Games’ Fortnite. Both games average well over 100 million monthly users and over 20 million daily players.
