Shiny Pikachu Libre is the rarest shiny Pokémon in Pokémon GO right now, by a landslide. Most lists will still name Detective Hat Pikachu as the rarest shiny in the game. But these lists ignore its shiny re-release for five days in October 2023, making them rankings from 2022.
Here are the 15 rarest shiny Pokémon in Pokémon GO as of 2026, counting down from 15 to 1. The list includes full-odds shinies available in the wild, as well as region-locked shinies, PvP rewards, and costume shinies. Each entry is assigned a status of obtainable now, event-only, trade-only, or untradeable.
What Makes a Shiny Rare in Pokémon GO

A shiny is a recolor. The shiny version of a Pokémon has the same CP, moves, and stats; it has nothing over its non-shiny counterpart except a different color scheme and sparkles. Its entire appeal is based on rarity. That scarcity comes from two very different places, and most lists of the rarest shinies in Pokemon GO blur them together.
First off, shiny odds. Niantic is tight-lipped on the topic, but through painstakingly collected samples, Bulbapedia has been able to come up with decently reliable figures:
● Standard wild rate: about 1 in 512
● Eggs/lower-tier raids: about 1 in 64
● Event-boosted rate: about 1 in 128
● Five-star raids: about 1 in 20
● Community Day rate: about 1 in 25
● Raid Day rate: about 1 in 10
Plenty of species never get a boost and stay at full odds forever. But shiny odds alone don’t make a shiny rare, since plenty of full-odds Pokémon are super-common, like Pidgey. The real rarity of a shiny is determined by the following:
● Permanent retirement: Especially one-off costume events, which, once retired, can never happen again, making their associated shinies impossible to catch in 2026.
● Region-exclusive Pokémon: Some shinies can only be encountered on certain continents, so most of the world depends on trades.
● Rank-dependent Pokémon: One encounter per season, earned with rating rather than luck or walking.
● Team GO Rocket and Shadow shinies: Two low-probability rolls stacked. They also can’t be traded.
● Limited encounters: You can’t farm them because of a cooldown, because they only spawn from a daily item, or because you have to tap to reveal them.
Everything in the top ten below is rare because of a gate, not because of a percentage.
How This Ranking Was Put Together
Because Niantic publishes no shiny rates, “rarest” has to be measured from the player side. This list was taken from the group of shinies considered to be in the top shiny rarity tiers on 9db. Those in the highest rarity tier must be owned by less than 6% of the population.
● Rarity is determined by the percentage of people who own a shiny based on the information people provide to 9db to use its Completion Checker feature.
● A shiny’s place within that highest rarity group isn’t necessarily an indication of its actual rarity. A brand-new shiny released last month also has low ownership, and nobody would call it rare.
To account for this, we ranked shinies by several factors, including how often they’ve been re-released since their initial debuts. A costume that came back once is a different animal from one that never did.
Next is whether they can be obtained in 2026, and how: wild, event, research, raid, region, or rank. Availability has been updated based on the shiny’s current status and what’s scheduled to happen in 2026 as of September. Finally, shinies that can’t be traded rank higher than similar ones that can, because players can’t ask for one via trade if they missed it while it was available.
The 15 Rarest Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon GO
Each entry covers when that shiny debuted or was most recently available, how to get it, and its status in 2026.
15. Shiny Galarian Ponyta
The pastel-colored shiny Galarian Ponyta debuted on May 11, 2021, when Pokémon GO made it available during its Luminous Legends X event via a worldwide Fairy-type catch challenge.
It appears in the wild only during events. Galarian Ponyta most recently appeared during Pokémon GO’s Lunar New Year 2026 event from February 17 to 21, 2026, where its shiny could be caught without a shiny-rate boost. Its availability was briefly increased during a joint Ponyta/Galarian Ponyta Community Day in September 2024. As of 2026, it’s still an event-only Pokémon that appears with full shiny odds during those events.
14. Shiny Pachirisu
Pachirisu is locked to Canada, Russia, and Alaska. Its shiny form was released during GO Tour: Sinnoh in February 2024, the only time it has been available in 10 km eggs worldwide. Even in-region, catching a Pachirisu is more of a hassle for Canadian players, since it doesn’t spawn consistently. As of 2026, it’s obtainable in-region and trade-only everywhere else.
13. Shiny Relicanth
Relicanth spawns only in New Zealand and its surrounding islands. Its shiny was introduced at the February 18, 2023, GO Tour: Hoenn event in Las Vegas and was obtainable worldwide in a 10 km egg during the global event. Otherwise, the global player base has had next to no way to obtain Relicanth.
It ranks above Pachirisu because its region is smaller. As of 2026, you can catch Relicanth in its home region, but otherwise it’s trade-only.

12. Shiny Salazzle
This one is rare by arithmetic. You can only obtain it by defeating a Team GO Rocket Leader to earn Strange Eggs, which can contain Salandit when hatched after being walked 12 km. Only females evolve, and only 1 in 8 hatchlings does.
The shiny surfaced unofficially on May 13, 2025, during the Crown Clash: Taken Over event and has a shiny rate of 1 in 64 as an egg. These two factors mean there’s a roughly 1-in-500 chance of hatching a shiny female Salandit. That is without taking into account the odds of encountering one at all, since other Pokémon can hatch from Strange Eggs. Status in 2026: obtainable now, slowly.
11. Shiny Spiritomb
As of 2026, Spiritomb is an event Pokémon and should appear again this year in late October. Spiritomb is the Halloween Pokémon, appearing during the last stretch of October through event Field Research and sometimes Timed Research. During the Halloween 2025 Part II event from October 27 to November 2, Spiritomb was the reward for the “Win 3 raids” event Field Research task and could be encountered as shiny.
Research encounters can’t be farmed the way wild spawns can, so if you don’t catch one during Halloween, you’ll have to wait a full year for your chance.
10. Shiny Kecleon
Kecleon doesn’t appear in the wild. Instead, you can encounter Kecleon by checking PokéStop photo discs for Kecleon half-invisibly hanging off the edge of the disc. If you see one, tap it repeatedly to make Kecleon fall to the map and trigger an encounter.
You can encounter it every 15 to 20 PokéStops, but turn your Rocket Radar off, as active Leader encounters take precedence. Its shiny has been at full odds since it debuted at GO Tour: Hoenn in Las Vegas in 2023. The shiny Kecleon has a blue stripe instead of a red one, so check the belt before you throw. If you’re patient enough, you can still find Kecleon in 2026.
9. Shiny Shadow Legendaries and Rocket-Locked Shadow Shinies
Shadow shinies stack two gates. Rescued Grunt Pokémon roll at about 1 in 256, and you have to find the right Grunt first. The legendary tier is harsher: five-star Shadow Raids, which debuted on May 22, 2023, are your best bet for shiny Shadow legendary Pokémon. Shadow Lugia was available through Shadow Raids on October 28 and 29, 2023, for example.
Shadow Pokémon can’t be traded under any circumstances, so you can’t make up for missed opportunities through trade. As of 2026, you can only get shiny Shadow legendaries during Shadow Raid weekends and other special events.
8. Shiny Galarian Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres
The Galarian birds spawn only from Daily Adventure Incense, which is available for 15 minutes each day. If players aren’t walking while using it, nothing spawns. The base catch rate is 0.3% with a flee rate of 90%, though shinies get a 1-in-20 shiny-chance roll and don’t flee. The only guaranteed catch is the Master Ball, and most players only get about one per year. Luckily, Galarian birds will still be around in 2026, albeit with punishing odds.
7. Shiny Meltan
Sending a Pokémon to Pokémon HOME grants you a Mystery Box, which you can activate to spawn Meltan for 30 minutes; then a three-day cooldown starts. You cannot farm shiny Meltan as much as you want, since it is limited to special events. The most recent was Steeled Resolve, which ran from April 28 to May 4, 2026, and reduced the Mystery Box cooldown to 24 hours. The shiny Meltan opportunities for 2026 are sadly over.
6. Shiny Heart-Pattern Spinda
Spinda can be encountered from research tasks only, with only one pattern available at a time. One of those patterns, available around Valentine’s Day, is the heart pattern. Its shiny form swaps the unbroken heart for a cracked green heart, making it the game’s best Easter egg.
In February 2026, all six Spinda from the Timed Research were shiny-eligible. If you weren’t hunting in a year when Niantic flipped the switch, you can’t hunt it now. As of 2026, its status remains event-only and inconsistent from year to year.
5. Shiny Mew, Jirachi, and Diancie From Masterwork Research
Masterwork Research is the paid, marathon way to get a shiny mythical. Past shiny mythicals obtained this way include Mew, from All-in-One #151, which went to GO Tour: Kanto ticket holders who finished the event research. All-in-One #151 was resold during the 7th Anniversary and needed a Platinum Kanto medal, 1,510 Pokémon caught, and 151 km walked. Jirachi followed the same format.
The 2026 entry is shiny Diancie, which you can get by purchasing the GO Tour: Kalos Global ticket (available for the events on February 28 and March 1). Masterwork Research doesn’t expire, but you have to buy it when it’s being sold.
Mythicals can’t be traded, so if you don’t get them when you can, you might never. Status in 2026: untradeable, ticket windows closed.
4. Shiny Straw Hat Pikachu and Fragment Hat Pikachu
Two collaboration costumes, both shiny from launch, neither ever back. Straw Hat Pikachu was available from July 22 to 29, 2019, as part of One Piece’s 22nd anniversary celebration, tied to a Kumamoto rebuilding project. Fragment Hat Pikachu was available for two days on October 6 and 7, 2018, as part of a streetwear collab with Hiroshi Fujiwara at HYPEFEST.
These outrank every low-odds wild shiny, as the costumes belong to other companies and would require a contract to use them again. After seven years without either costume returning, it’s unlikely they’ll be added again anytime soon. As of 2026, you can only get Straw Hat and Fragment Hat Pikachu through trade.
3. Shiny Detective Hat Pikachu
Detective Hat Pikachu was first obtainable from May 7 to 17, 2019, as part of the movie promotion. During this time, it could only be encountered from photobombing snapshots, and it was shiny-locked. But a handful of players exploited a loophole by taking their snapshot in the last few minutes of the event, allowing them to tap Pikachu after the event and roll for a shiny. These were the only shiny Detective Hat Pikachus for four years.
When “Detective Pikachu Returns” launched on Nintendo Switch, Detective Hat Pikachu became obtainable from October 5 to 9, 2023, including shiny. Players could get it from its daily snapshot encounter, Timed Research encounters, and wild encounters.
Five days is still a tiny window. As it is Pokémon’s own IP, it will likely return when there’s something to sell. That’s why it sits at three instead of one: supply exists, and a second return is plausible. The Detective Hat is a trade-only costume in 2026.
2. Shiny Unown
All 28 forms of Unown have their own shiny, and they appear almost exclusively at special events. All of them appeared at GO Fest 2026: Global on July 11 and 12, when they were available from Incense. Unown X and Y have been shiny-eligible at GO Tour: Kalos from a ticketed, version-locked Field Research task.
At any given shiny-eligible event, the featured shiny letters will be available at the event shiny rate of 1 in 128. You can catch individual shiny letters, but the full alphabet is the most expensive collection in the game and is priced in flights, tickets, and years. Status in 2026: event-only, GO Fest, GO Tour, and GO Wild Area.
1. Shiny Pikachu Libre

The only shiny in Pokémon GO you earn with skill. Getting the costume itself is extremely difficult. It’s a reward for achieving a 3,000 rating in the GO Battle League (Legend status, or Rank 24), and you get only one encounter per season. Pikachu Libre has been shiny-eligible since December 31, 2020, but there’s still no guarantee you’ll encounter a shiny. The current Twilight Trails season, September 8 to December 1, 2026, still lists it as the Legend reward with a shiny possible.
That is why it beats every costume above it. Other costume Pokémon have been retired for some time and therefore have a set amount in circulation to be obtained through trade. But getting hold of a shiny requires a top-fraction PvP player to hit Legend, be lucky enough to encounter a shiny, and agree to trade away their hard-earned seasonal reward.
Ownership sits at the bottom of every dataset we’ve seen. Pikachu Libre is still obtainable to the most skilled GO PvP players.
Party Hat Forms and Other Rare Shinies That Just Missed the Cut
● Costume Pichu: The first version of Ash Hat Pichu could be obtained from 2 km eggs during the 2017 anniversary event. It became shiny-eligible in August 2019, a full two years after release. This is a contender for number one, but nobody knows how many there really are, so it can’t be ranked on data.
The same applies to the Halloween 2017 Witch Hat Pichu, which can only be obtained from an egg and has a shiny hatch rate estimated by the community at around 1 in 50.
● Party Hat Wobbuffet/Nidorino: Older lists ranked these in the top five, but New Year’s 2026 put both in three-star raids with shinies available, alongside Party Hat Gengar and Raticate. This makes these event shinies recurring every year, meaning they’re out of contention.
● Comfey: It is only available in Hawaii and difficult to get a hold of. It still doesn’t have a shiny form, so there is nothing to rank yet.
● Goomy and Noibat: They were both nightmare wild shinies until they each got a Community Day, the best way to make a shiny common.
● Alolan Marowak: Raid-locked, but it rotates through raids so often that patience beats luck.
How to Get the Rarest Shinies in 2026
Out of these 15 entries, at least six are still obtainable this year. You can catch Kecleon, Salazzle, and the Galarian birds on a normal day. Spiritomb can be caught during Halloween, while Unown should be available during the ticketed GO Wild Area in November. Pikachu Libre just takes some PvP skill but is possible.
Meltan and heart Spinda must wait for their events to return. The collaboration Pikachu, Detective Hat Pikachu, and the regionals are trade-only for most of the world, while the Masterwork mythicals and Shadow shinies cannot be traded.
Events, Raid Days, and Community Days
The boost tiers matter more than anything else you control. Community Days have shiny odds of 1 in 25, and Raid Days have shiny odds of 1 in 10. This means that a full-odds species is almost guaranteed during the three-hour event, which is why almost nothing with a Community Day is on this list.
The rare ones will come back at predictable times, with Spiritomb during Halloween, Unown during GO Fest or GO Tour, and Party Hat forms during the New Year. Just watch for an announcement. When Niantic announces a Steel-type event, you’ll most likely see a Meltan. Set your alarm and join the event, as nothing outside it will work.
Eggs, Incense, and Stacking Your Encounters
Stacking shiny-hunting methods doesn’t change the per-encounter rate. However, it can improve the number of encounters you get per hour, the only factor you can control when hunting for full-odds shinies.
Finding a Kecleon means running routes rich with PokéStops. Getting a shiny Salazzle involves challenging every Leader you can and keeping incubators full of 12 km eggs. For the Galarian birds, it means never wasting the Daily Adventure Incense on a stationary day, since the spawn engine only fires while you move.
Trading Is the Only Route to a Retired Shiny
For a retired costume, trading is the whole strategy. This involves linking up with another player in-game, which means being within about 100 meters. You can do only one special trade each day and trade each Pokémon only once. Shadow Pokémon can’t be traded, and mythicals are banned, except Meltan and Melmetal.
Prices vary by friendship level and whether the shiny is already in your Pokédex. A form that you’ve never registered costs full price.
Friendship level | Days of interaction | Stardust for an unregistered shiny | Stardust for a registered shiny |
|---|---|---|---|
Good Friend | 1 | 1,000,000 | 20,000 |
Great Friend | 7 | 800,000 | 16,000 |
Ultra Friend | 30 | 80,000 | 1,600 |
Best Friend | 90 | 40,000 | 800 |
Those day counts refer to the game’s friendship system: three months of gifts can net players trades at the lowest price. However, if they’re looking for a particular Pokémon like Detective Hat Pikachu, Stardust is the blocker. Some will do a month’s worth of Star Piece running, while others will call upon a Stardust farming service to help them along.
Buying or Trading for an Account
If your desired shiny is untradeable, your only remaining option is to purchase an entire account on the marketplace. Detective Hat Pikachu, shiny Pikachu Libre, and complete shiny Unown sets headline Pokémon GO account listings, and they set the prices. If you decide to take the leap and buy an account, there are four things to keep in mind:
● Obtain the full login details and the recovery email address so the account is actually yours on your own phone, not on loan.
● For shiny Pokémon exclusive to other regions, find out what region the account is from before buying.
● Shadow and mythical shinies can’t be traded away, meaning the account itself is the collectible.
● Shinies with a costume can’t evolve, meaning their value lies in the state they’re in.
Which Rare Shiny Should You Chase First?

First up, chase Spiritomb, since Halloween is a few weeks away. The Spiritomb research is free, and a shiny-eligible catch with no ticket attached is as good as it gets on this list. Second, tap away at PokéStops now to get your Kecleon, because the full-odds grind only pays off for those who started early. Third, start working toward Best Friends with three people this month, because 90 days from now is when the 40,000 Stardust trade for a retired costume becomes possible.
Leave the Galarian birds to your daily Incense habit and let them happen. Skip the shiny Unown alphabet unless you already have a GO Tour ticket and a spare decade. And if you want to catch the hardest one, Pikachu Libre, the only route is a 3,000 rating, so open the GO Battle League tonight.
You can buy, trade, or wait for everything else on this list. Pikachu Libre will take some skill, or you can buy an accomplished account on the marketplace, where somebody else did it for you.
