Your village is the central hub around which the entire game resolves. Here, you can find the Town Hall and various ancillary buildings used for defensive and support purposes. Interestingly enough, the standard layout is only used in the standard game mode. If youโ€™re playing Clan Wars, the game will switch you to the War Base, which is like the village for your Clan.

Unlike your own village, where the main goal is to prevent attackers from looting you, a War Base is designed to avoid enemy clans from scoring a 3-star victory. To do this, each member donates a defensive troop in your Clan Castle, increasing your odds of winning Clan War League (CWL). Itโ€™s also worth noting that units, defenses, and traps are reset before new attacks, so Clan members donโ€™t have to donate troops all the time.

If you wish to increase your odds of winning Clan Wars, you must first master the basic War Base mechanics. In this article, weโ€™ll share popular layouts and other tricks that you can use when clashing against other teams.

What Exactly Is a War Base?

War Base

A War Base is your exclusive defensive layout used during a Clan War. It is entirely separate from your Home Base, the one visitors and multiplayer attackers see. This separation is a stroke of genius, as it means the opposing clan canโ€™t scout your active trap placements or study your defensive patterns before launching their war attack.

During the 24-hour Preparation Day, your clan fills each otherโ€™s War Base Clan Castles with the best defensive troops, designed to counter the current meta.

On Battle Day, each participant can attack twice, aiming to earn a maximum of 3 stars on an enemy war base. The best attack against each enemy base determines your clanโ€™s final score. The winning clan walks away with a substantial war win bonus, a substantial amount of Clan XP, and, of course, bragging rights.

The Evolution of Clash of Clans Base Design

Clash of Clans Base Design

The art of base building has gone through significant changes since Clan Wars first emerged in 2014. Early on, the meta was simple: put the Town Hall in the middle and surround it with everything you had. It was a straightforward, almost brutish, approach.

But as attackers grew more sophisticated, so did the architects of defense. The introduction of game-changing defenses, such as the Eagle Artillery at Town Hall 11 and Inferno Towers at Town Hall 10, forced a complete rethink. No longer was a simple core enough, and base designers started creating island compartments, and offsetting Town Halls, making pathing a nightmare.

Today, at higher Town Hall levels, the game is entirely different. With the Town Hall itself becoming a weapon from TH12 onward, and the arrival of Scattershots and Monoliths, modern war base layouts can be complex puzzles, featuring asymmetrical designs, bait channels, and multiple high-damage cores.

Common War Base Layouts

War Base Layout CoC

While every great War Base is unique, most designs are born from a few key schools of thought, where each philosophy is a direct response to popular attack strategies and counters in the current CoC meta.

โ—       Ring Bases: These layouts force ground troops on a scenic tour around the baseโ€™s perimeter. As troops like Golems, Pekkas, or Hog Riders circle the outer ring, they are relentlessly pounded by defenses protected in the core. The goal? To make the attacker run out of steam, or worse, time.

โ—       Box & Diamond Bases: Characterized by their tight, symmetrical compartments, these bases are designed to disrupt an attackerโ€™s funnel of movement. Troops often split in unintended directions, spells lose their value in the compact spaces, and an assault on the core becomes a grueling, wall-by-wall battle.

โ—       Anti-3-Star Bases: These bases often concede an easyโ€ 2-star victory by placing the Town Hall near the edge. However, the rest of the base is a death trap. Key defenses are spread out to prevent them from being taken down simultaneously, and intricate trap networks are set to neutralize the most potent offensive threats.

War Base vs. Home Base

A common mistake for new players is treating their War Base and Home Base with the same design principles. They are fundamentally different, built for entirely different games.

Feature

War Base

Home Base

Primary Goal

Deny stars to the enemy clan.

Protect resources (loot) or gain trophies.

Layout Visibility

Hidden from the opposing clan until attacked.

Always visible to any player scouting.

Clan Castle

Holds dedicated defensive troops that respawn after each attack.

Troops are depleted after one defense and need to be replenished.

Trap Strategy

Placed to surprise and counter mighty war armies.

Often predictable after a few scouts or attacks.

Resource Storages

Act as high-hitpoint shields to slow down attackers.

These are the primary targets that need protection.

Best War Base Practices for Every Town Hall

Coc Organized Layout

Crafting a strong War Base is a challenge, with each Town Hall level presenting new tools and opportunities.

โ—       TH7โ€“TH9: This is your apprenticeship, and the focus is on fundamentals here. Youโ€™ll want to centralize your Clan Castle as itโ€™s your most powerful defense. Create compartments to slow down Dragons and use double Giant Bomb placements to neutralize Hog Rider attacks, and protect your Air Defenses like jewels.

โ—       TH10โ€“TH11: At this TH, you gain access to Inferno Towers and the Eagle Artillery. Here, you can start experimenting with offset Town Hall designs and creating island compartments to protect key defenses. Your base should tell a story, luring an attacker into a path that seems inviting but is actually a corridor of doom.

โ—       TH12โ€“TH14: Your Town Hall is now a weapon. Place it in a heavily guarded compartment where it can wreak havoc. Use your Scattershots to create kill zones for ground troops. Your base should be asymmetrical, forcing attackers to make difficult decisions under pressure.

โ—       TH15โ€“TH16: With Spell Towers and the Monolith at your command, your base becomes a symphony of destruction. Create multiple, isolated high-DPS cores. Use clever building placement to mess with the pathing of the Royal Champion and other heroes.

Clan Wars Esports and Community Culture

CoC Esports

At the highest tier of Clan War League, some teams even spend money on base designers who help them introduce the best layouts. Unfortunately, the popular meta builds are often stolen by other clans, forcing teams to reinvent themselves and create counters to counters continually.

Whatever the case might be, people love to experiment with various defenses, preparing themselves for any type of unit lineup. If you wish to improve your game, you can always check out base copy links and proven designs that are popular among community members.

Keep in mind that not everyone has the time to create a perfect base. For some, this is an annoying obstacle that prevents them from winning sizable Clan War loot.
